Craniosacral Therapy

Whether you are an experienced spa goer who is looking for something new, or you are relatively new to the holistic and healing experience of a good spa, you'll find that you may be curious about craniosacral therapy, which is sometimes abbreviated to CST.

Craniosacral Osteopathy was developed around 1898-1900 by physician William Sutherland, D.O. This interesting form of massage was then further developed by the osteopathic physician John E. Upledger, using theories that he had put together between 1975 and 1983.

This is a technique that is meant to complement your body's natural healing process, and Upledger promoted it as a preventative health measure, due to the fact that it can actually work to activate your immune system and help your body resist disease.

For many people who do not enjoy the deep tissue manipulation that is seen in other forms of massage, craniosacral therapy offers a great alternative. It is significantly gentler, and if you are a little concerned about giving yourself over to a more intense massage experience, this might be exactly what you are looking for!

What to Expect from Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy involves the manipulation and stimulation of the soft tissue and bones that are found in your head, your spine and your pelvis.
A massage therapist who specializes in this form of therapy will pay special attention to the softer membranes of your body as well as the fluids that cushion your brain and your spinal cord from injury.
You'll find that at the end of this treatment that you are left feeling content and at ease, and this has proved an excellent stress-reducing mechanism for many busy people.

When you go in for a craniosacral therapy session, you'll find that you are entering a safe environment since the amount of contact between you and the massage therapist, though vital, is quite minimal. You'll find that the most pressure that is put on you at any one time comes to the amount of five grams, no more than a nickel.
The professional performing your treatment will listen to the flow and fluctuation of the fluids within your craniosacral system and then start creating a small amount of pressure on key points. This type of therapy requires very little in the way of manipulation.

Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy

Because of the gentleness of this type of treatment, you'll find that it is one that is very easily tolerated by children, who can benefit from the gentle, non-invasive, undemanding touch.
Similarly, this type of therapy is often recommended for pregnant women, who can find a great deal of relief from the stresses that their bodies and hormones are putting them through.

Essentially, through the manipulation of the fluids in your craniosacral system, you'll find that your body is given new instructions.
The healing and wellness that you experience in this type of therapy is simply a reminder to your body of what it can and should be doing. The emphasis from the practitioner is that the healing comes from within, rather than without.
The results that can be produced by craniosacral therapy can be quite impressive, and this type of treatment is often used to reduce pain or relieve other undesirable symptoms.

Craniosacral therapy has been used to treat a number of issues, and for many people, it provides an extremely effective solution to things that they have not been able to solve with drugs or in other homeopathic methods.

People who suffer from migraine headaches have had some success with this system, as have people who have chronic pain throughout their back or in their neck.
Children and adults who are autistic can find this type of touching more bearable than other types, and in general this treatment is excellent for any problem which is related to stress or tension.

If you are in a situation where you can give craniosacral therapy a try, there is every reason to go ahead! This is possibly one of the most gentle, least invasive therapies out there, and it is an excellent one for both the experienced spa goer and the novice.
